Kanawha County Jail Records
Kanawha County local jail custody is handled by the West Virginia Division of Corrections and Rehabilitation offender-search system, not by a sheriff-run Kanawha County jail roster. The main facility is South Central Regional Jail and Correctional Facility in Charleston. WVDCR lists that facility as serving Jackson and Kanawha counties and as holding pretrial felony and misdemeanor defendants as well as sentenced local inmates. A person arrested by the sheriff, Charleston Police, a city department, West Virginia State Police, or another local agency may therefore appear in the regional jail tools if the person is booked and remains in state regional jail custody.
The Kanawha County Sheriff's Office still matters, but for a different set of records. The sheriff handles law-enforcement incidents, warrants, civil process, judicial security, home confinement, and public-record routing for sheriff-handled cases. Its FOIA page says the office provides records only for incidents handled and investigated by that office. If Charleston Police, Dunbar Police, Nitro Police, Saint Albans Police, South Charleston Police, West Virginia State Police, or another agency made the arrest, the request must go to that agency. Jail custody records should be checked through WVDCR, the facility, Daily Incarcerations, and VINE before assuming the sheriff has the record.
Use the Kanawha County Jail Roster
The first lookup path is the official WV Regional Jail Offender Search. It is free and public, but it uses reCAPTCHA and WVDCR's disclaimer warns that location, release date, status, and other offender details can change quickly. That warning is important in Kanawha County because the jail is a regional facility and a search result can change after release, transfer, sentencing, a court order, or a data update. Start broad with the last name, then use first name, date details, facility, or case information to avoid mixing people with similar names.
- Open the WV Regional Jail offender search and enter at least the first three letters of the last name.
- Add a first name when the result list is too broad, then complete the reCAPTCHA and submit the search.
- Check Daily Incarcerations by Kanawha County or South Central Regional Jail when the name search does not locate a new booking.
- Compare the custody result with magistrate or circuit court records when the question is about filed charges, bond, hearings, or case status.
- Call South Central Regional Jail at (304) 558-1336 if the online tools conflict or a recent arrest may not have posted yet.
Daily Incarcerations is not a full archive. It is a current custody and admissions tool with a county dropdown and institution links. On the research date, South Central Regional Jail appeared as a selectable institution. For older jail records, released people, or incident reports, use the proper public-records custodian instead of relying on Daily Incarcerations as a history database.
Kanawha County Roster Search Fields
The regional jail search is simple, but it has strict name-entry rules. The form requires a last name and a reCAPTCHA challenge. The Daily Incarcerations page uses a county dropdown rather than a person-search form. These two tools answer related but different questions: one searches for a person, and the other checks current daily custody by county or institution.
| Field Label | Type | Required | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Last Name (Partial or Full) | Text | Yes | Enter at least the first three letters; maximum length shown as 100 characters. |
| First Name (Optional) | Text | No | Useful for common surnames in Kanawha County jail records. |
| reCAPTCHA | Challenge | Yes | Required before the regional jail search can be submitted. |
| County | Dropdown | Yes on Daily Incarcerations | Select Kanawha for county custody context or use the South Central institution listing. |
WVDCR's public-information notice says sentencing information should not be treated as the final court record. That means a Kanawha County inmate record can be useful for custody, but the court with jurisdiction remains the better source for filed charges, dispositions, and sentence details.
Kanawha County Inmate Profile Fields
Research could not inspect a full live South Central inmate profile because individual WVDCR records were blocked by reCAPTCHA and dynamic profile navigation. For that reason, the safest field inventory separates confirmed search-system fields from items that WVDCR's own disclaimer implies may appear or may change. Do not assume that every Kanawha County inmate profile shows a mugshot, housing unit, booking number, or bond field unless the current live profile shows it.
| Field | What It Shows |
|---|---|
| Name | The regional jail search is keyed by last name and optional first name. |
| Facility | Daily and offender tools distinguish county or institution, including South Central Regional Jail. |
| Custody status | WVDCR warns status can change quickly and may not show the true current status. |
| Release date | The disclaimer specifically warns release dates may not be current. |
| Sentencing or court information | Use as a pointer only; the court record is the final source for the criminal action. |
| Mugshot, bond, booking number, housing | Not confirmed from static inspection; verify in the live WVDCR record or with the facility. |
Custody note: A Kanawha County jail record can lag behind release, transfer, or court action, so verify urgent custody facts with South Central or the court.
Kanawha County Jail, DOC, Federal, ICE
Kanawha County inmate records split by custody type. Current local arrests and short-term regional jail custody belong in the WVDCR regional jail tools. Sentenced prison custody belongs in the WVDCR prison offender search. Federal custody belongs in the Bureau of Prisons locator after federal sentencing and designation, while federal pretrial defendants may be in U.S. Marshals custody and may not yet appear in BOP. Immigration custody is checked through ICE ODLS, not through the county roster alone.
| Custody Type | Where to Look | Kanawha County Use |
|---|---|---|
| Pretrial or local sentenced jail custody | WV Regional Jail search and Daily Incarcerations | Primary path for South Central Regional Jail. |
| Sentenced state prison custody | WVDCR prison offender search | Use after commitment or transfer from the regional jail system. |
| Federal sentenced custody | BOP inmate locator | No BOP prison is located in Kanawha County. |
| Immigration custody | ICE Online Detainee Locator System | Separate locator; South Central has past ICE inspection material but is not treated as a dedicated ICE facility here. |
| Victim or public notifications | West Virginia VINE | Use for custody and case notification where available. |
The WVDCR prison search requires either at least the first four numbers of an OID or the first three letters of both first and last name, plus reCAPTCHA. That is a different search from the regional jail roster. For federal results, the BOP locator can search by register number or by name and may show name, register number, age, race, sex, release date, and location.
Kanawha County Jail Facilities
Two adult WVDCR facilities are physically in Kanawha County, but they serve different roles. South Central Regional Jail and Correctional Facility is the first stop for most local jail custody searches. Charleston Correctional Center and Jail is a minimum-security work-release and female Residential Substance Abuse Treatment facility. It is not the ordinary first-stop booking jail for a new Kanawha County arrest.
South Central Regional Jail and Correctional Facility
1001 Centre Way
Charleston, WV 25309
(304) 558-1336
Regional jail serving Jackson and Kanawha counties; rated population 488 in the WVDCR FY2025 Annual Report.
Charleston Correctional Center and Jail
1356 Hansford Street
Charleston, WV 25301
(304) 340-6921
Minimum-security work-release and female RSAT custody; rated population 128.
For facility-specific rules, use the facility phone line. The public South Central page gives visitation rules, while the Charleston Correctional Center page does not publish the same level of public visit detail. A person moved to program custody may still be in WVDCR custody, but the lookup and visit questions are not the same as a new regional jail booking.
Booking Process in Kanawha County
A Kanawha County arrest can be made by the sheriff, Charleston Police, another city department, West Virginia State Police, or a federal or other agency. If the person is not released at the scene or by quick court action, jail intake normally includes identity checks, property inventory, search, fingerprints, a booking photograph if used, medical and mental-health screening, classification, and housing assignment. The official South Central facility page does not publish a minute-by-minute booking manual, so timing should be treated as case-specific.
West Virginia magistrate rules are clearer on first appearance. An officer who makes an arrest under a warrant, or a person who makes a warrantless arrest, takes the arrested person without unnecessary delay before a magistrate in the county where the arrest occurred. At that first appearance, the magistrate advises rights and handles bail or bond issues. Booking labels can differ from prosecutor-filed court charges, so use Kanawha County court records after jail arrest when the question is what charge was filed in court.
- Booking
- The jail intake event after arrest.
- Classification
- The jail decision about custody level and housing placement.
- Detainer
- A hold from another agency that can prevent release.
- Remand
- A court order returning a person to custody.
Kanawha County Jail Visits
South Central Regional Jail uses non-contact visitation scheduled by offender request on days approved by the facility. The official rules allow only two adults or one adult and two juveniles, and juvenile visitation forms must be notarized and turned in. Adult visitor information includes name, address, date of birth, telephone number, and driver's license number. Visitors are limited to one visit every 30 days from the visitor's last visit, and late arrivals receive only the time left in the scheduled slot.
| Day | Hours | Type |
|---|---|---|
| Monday | No visitation | Public non-contact visits unavailable |
| Tuesday | No visitation | Public non-contact visits unavailable |
| Wednesday | No visitation | Public non-contact visits unavailable |
| Thursday | 1:00 p.m.-9:00 p.m. | Scheduled by offender request |
| Friday | No visitation | Public non-contact visits unavailable |
| Saturday | 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. | Scheduled by offender request |
| Sunday | 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. | Scheduled by offender request |
Dress and property rules are strict. The official list bars hats, scarves, coats, jackets, hoodies, keys, lighters, wallets, purses, cell phones, jewelry, piercings, open-toed shoes, sandals, bib overalls, pants with holes, short skirts or shorts, sleeveless shirts, low-cut or see-through clothing, tight spandex, leggings, jeggings, and orange clothing. Call South Central before visiting if the person was just booked, transferred, placed in a special unit, or moved for court.
Kanawha County Records Requests
If an online jail search does not answer the question, route the request by custodian. Jail custody facts begin with WVDCR or South Central. Sheriff incident reports, body-camera footage, audio statements, and other records from sheriff-handled incidents use the sheriff records and FOIA pages. Court documents come from the Kanawha Circuit Clerk or Magistrate Clerk, not from the jail. That split is local and important because the sheriff's FOIA notice says the office does not govern or maintain records for other agencies.
The official Kanawha sheriff records request page routes involved-person and attorney requests separately from public FOIA requests. The matching sheriff FOIA form asks for requester details, incident date, names of people involved, and the information requested. It also requires acknowledgement that other agencies keep their own records and that reasonable reproduction fees apply.
The official Kanawha sheriff FOIA form is shown below.
Use that form for sheriff-held records, but use WVDCR, the facility, or the court clerk when the requested Kanawha County inmate record is a jail custody record or court file.
Kanawha County Inmate Mail and Money
The official South Central and Charleston facility pages reviewed did not publish a detailed mail-format, phone-vendor, tablet, video-visit, commissary, or deposit-fee schedule. Because those rules can change, do not rely on unofficial fee lists. Confirm custody first, then call the facility or use current WVDCR vendor instructions before sending money, mail, or property. Include the person's full legal name, the facility name, and any confirmed WVDCR or offender number when the facility directs that format.
Note: Confirm custody and facility rules before sending funds, mail, or visit requests because transfer or release can make a deposit or visit fail.
