The Kanawha County Sheriff's Office still matters, but for a different set of records. The sheriff handles law-enforcement incidents, warrants, civil process, judicial security, home confinement, and public-record routing for sheriff-handled cases. Its FOIA page says the office provides records only for incidents handled and investigated by that office. If Charleston Police, Dunbar Police, Nitro Police, Saint Albans Police, South Charleston Police, West Virginia State Police, or another agency made the arrest, the request must go to that agency. Jail custody records should be checked through WVDCR, the facility, Daily Incarcerations, and VINE before assuming the sheriff has the record.

Use the Kanawha County Jail Roster

The first lookup path is the official WV Regional Jail Offender Search. It is free and public, but it uses reCAPTCHA and WVDCR's disclaimer warns that location, release date, status, and other offender details can change quickly. That warning is important in Kanawha County because the jail is a regional facility and a search result can change after release, transfer, sentencing, a court order, or a data update. Start broad with the last name, then use first name, date details, facility, or case information to avoid mixing people with similar names.

On the research date, South Central Regional Jail appeared as a selectable institution. For older jail records, released people, or incident reports, use the proper public-records custodian instead of relying on Daily Incarcerations as a history database.

Kanawha County Roster Search Fields

The regional jail search is simple, but it has strict name-entry rules. The form requires a last name and a reCAPTCHA challenge. The Daily Incarcerations page uses a county dropdown rather than a person-search form. These two tools answer related but different questions: one searches for a person, and the other checks current daily custody by county or institution.

WVDCR's public-information notice says sentencing information should not be treated as the final court record. That means a Kanawha County inmate record can be useful for custody, but the court with jurisdiction remains the better source for filed charges, dispositions, and sentence details.

Two adult WVDCR facilities are physically in Kanawha County, but they serve different roles. Charleston Correctional Center and Jail is a minimum-security work-release and female Residential Substance Abuse Treatment facility. It is not the ordinary first-stop booking jail for a new Kanawha County arrest.

Kanawha County Jail Visits

South Central Regional Jail uses non-contact visitation scheduled by offender request on days approved by the facility. The official rules allow only two adults or one adult and two juveniles, and juvenile visitation forms must be notarized and turned in. Adult visitor information includes name, address, date of birth, telephone number, and driver's license number. Visitors are limited to one visit every 30 days from the visitor's last visit, and late arrivals receive only the time left in the scheduled slot.

Dress and property rules are strict. The official list bars hats, scarves, coats, jackets, hoodies, keys, lighters, wallets, purses, cell phones, jewelry, piercings, open-toed shoes, sandals, bib overalls, pants with holes, short skirts or shorts, sleeveless shirts, low-cut or see-through clothing, tight spandex, leggings, jeggings, and orange clothing. Call South Central before visiting if the person was just booked, transferred, placed in a special unit, or moved for court.

Kanawha County Records Requests

If an online jail search does not answer the question, route the request by custodian. Jail custody facts begin with WVDCR or South Central. Sheriff incident reports, body-camera footage, audio statements, and other records from sheriff-handled incidents use the sheriff records and FOIA pages. Court documents come from the Kanawha Circuit Clerk or Magistrate Clerk, not from the jail.
